On November 10th, internationally renowned architect Steven Holl was invited to give a lecture titled “Making Architecture” at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. As the originator of the “CAFAa Lecture Series” and Dean and professor of the school of architecture, CAFA, Zhu Pei presided over the lecture and the symposium on the theme of “Anchoring, Perception and The Phenomenology of Architecture”. In the lecture, Steven Holl emphasized the importance of thinking and architectural theory, which is the foundation of all practice. He also described the chemical reactions of light, water and music in the process of making architecture. Additionally, architecture is also a social cohesion.
In both lecture and symposium, Steven Holl mentioned the project “Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln Museum” designed by Studio Zhu-Pei twice, saying that: “This is a very important piece of architecture because it contains almost everything I am going to talk about in this lecture. It is an inspiring architectural work. The various dimensions of the building, its relationship to the community and the region, the history of the site are integrated into a smaller scale museum. I think this kind of architecture is more like a harmonious music. In the same way, it involves more thinking about the transition of materials and the refinement of concepts. That’s what we should lead young people to think…”
