2017.11.20
On November 18th, 2017, “798 Art District Public Space Management International Forum” was held at the UCCA. The forum invited experts and scholars in the field of art management, curatorial exhibition, architectural design, psychology and other related fields to have in-depth discussions about different aspects of the art district’s development, covering topics including: public art projects, the planning and design of public art space and its management, etc. Zhu Pei was invited to attend the forum and delivered a keynote speech“Meaning in‘Void’”. From an architect’s perspective, he talked about how humans view public spaces, museums, art galleries, etc. In explaining the concept of‘Void’, Zhu Pei said: “Chinese art has been thinking‘Void’a long time, unlike western art, which contains a lot of blank space. ‘Void’doesn’t mean nothing, it means everything.” Afterwards, he took“Pace Museum”and “Minsheng Museum of Modern Art”as examples to illustrate how space was used in architecture: “ There must be room for activity in today’s art space. The completion of construction could not be done without the participation of activities and artists’works. Only when art works and activities go in, the space will be‘Void’.”
